DIY 5v Regulator from old ESC

Hi guys. Just wanna share my latest discoveries. It is actually common thing within electronics gurus out there, but i am a newbie in this so this is something i am really excited with.
As for us who has been long involved with RC hobby, i believe we have quite a collection of burned out ESCs laying around somewhere in our home.
Now we can use it to power something else.

7805 on the esc can be identify from the lettering on it
SMD 7805 looks like

You will need a soldering iron to take it out from the esc board. A couple of capacitors. Led and resistor are optional . Then from the writings on the regulator, search for its datasheet. It will be something like 78M05. This is only to be certain of the value that should go with the capacitor needed to make it work properly. But i seems to get away with 10uF capacitor on both legs.

The circuit is no different from the one i made before (http://kcrcw.blogspot.com/2013/07/simple-diy-5v-bec.html). Now with reverse polarity protection using N4001/4007.

The only thing now, the center leg is not being used (it is cut anyway). The top base is actually the ground for this smd regulator.

To make it smaller you can even used a smd capacitor. I am lucky to find it in my electronics recycle bin (yes i don't throw away my broken electronics).

So instead of this

I get this:

This is the one i made to power my breadboard with 5V out of a 2s lipo.

This one i used to power my navigation light project on my tricopter using the 3s pack. It has the smd capacitor on it.
