How To - Diy Hinges

Hinges is a must in making your control surfaces working properly. There are many ways of making a hinges on a scratchbuild model aircraft. It is depend on the build material you are using for your build and how strong you want your hinges to hold.
For a basic scratchbuild using compress foam/ foam board, the easiest way is to make a tape hinge. Here i'm going to show you the basic of making a tape hinge for your model aircraft.

- Objectives/Concept of hinges
   - to give a free movement of control surfaces on model on both direction up/down or left/right.

You will need:

  - tape of your choice.
  - hobby knife / box cutter.
  - ruler.

Here is an example how to do it. I am using a scrap of depron for this purpose.

your hinge line marked. Notice the control surface side.

Make a cut on the hinge line.

make a roughly 45deg bevel on the control surface side using your ruler and cutter placed at an angle.

your control surface beveled.

place the two pieces apart about 1mm and tape it together.

fold it over and tape the underside.

finished hinge.
